Darrelle Revis Trade Rumors Start After Owner Woody Johnson Comments

Jason LaCanfora of CBS has reported that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson will explore a trade involving Darrelle Revis. With all the drama in the organization now we can add Darrelle Revis trade rumors. The idea of a trade does make sense though. For an organization that is just short of 20 million dollars over the salary cap and Revis coming up on the last year of his contract the Jets may not be able to re-sign the all-pro cornerback.

New GM John Idzik and Owner Woody Johnson may be stuck in pickle stemming from the contract of quarterback Mark Sanchez. A contract Rex Ryan had a great deal to do with. Darrelle Revis will be paid $6 million next season and Mark Sanchez is guaranteed $8.25 million. If the Jets don’t look to trade Revis and he returns to 100% the reality is they won’t be able to afford the price tag he will demand when his contract expires at the end of 2013 season. That’s why starting Darelle Revis rumors is a smart move with one exception. He left last season with a knee injury.

This is especially concerning because it will limit the value they will get for Revis on the NFL trade market. There is no guarantee that he comes back 100%. He is certainly young enough to come back but if you cannot afford him after next season you get zero for him. At least by trading him now you can get something. What you give up is the one true shut down corner in the NFL. That’s a tough pill to swallow if I am a Jets fan. First you go through the Tebow circus, Sanchez and his horrid season, and now Darrelle Revis rumors?

One thing is for certain, Woody Johnson and John Idzik are taking control away from Rex Ryan and rebuilding the ship. That means a hard future for Jets fans. Given the Jets history for giving up draft picks it could be quite a process to rebuild. If the Jets are smart they will find a way to keep on of the best players in football and stop the Darrelle Revis rumors, but I don’t think the math will work.
