BJP should explain low GDP growth in Gujarat: Scindia

Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leaders have given the Congress party a 24-hour deadline to declare their stand on the reservation status for the community.

The Congress leaders are now mulling over the selection of candidates for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections.

Former Union minister and Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia today said the BJP should explain why Gujarat's GDP growth has been low during its long rule in the state.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has convened a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) at 10.30 am on November 20.

The PAAS leaders are now feeling the heat, as Congress drags its feet over the clarifications it has provide to the "samiti" over the demands made by Hardik for soliciting the Patidar support. The JD (U) is now divided into two factions and Vasava had met Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Gehlot.

It will be a show of strength by both factions as the JD (U) has fielded candidates in tribal areas where Vasava, who voted in favour of the Congress's Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha polls ignoring Nitish's directions, has a considerable following.

"Even though discussion is being held on all the 182 seats, we might have to leave a few seats for our allies", Gujarat Congress in-charge Ashok Gehlot said.

The last date for filing nominations is November 21. While the Congress officially claims PAAS has not sought any tickets, sources said talks are on with the outfit for fielding mutually acceptable candidates, including some PAAS leaders, in about 25 seats.

Mevani, who has repeatedly asserted that he will continue to oppose the BJP but not share the stage with the Congress, too is said to be seeking his pound of flesh. It has also inducted backward caste (OBC) leader Alpesh Thakore recently and is said to be consulting him over candidate selection. Votes will be counted on December 18 along with those for Himachal Pardesh, where elections were held last week.
