U.S. and Korea navies to conduct joint maritime counter special operations exercise

It will also conduct combined joint operations and exercises with ROK Navy, U.S. Seventh Fleet, ROK Air Force, U.S. Pacific Air Forces' 7th Air Force and U.S. Eighth Army for the objective of continuing the United States' national policy and commitment to the U.S. - ROK alliance and the region.

Anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns will be fired during the exercise, the navy added.

"Both the South Korean and U.S. Navy will firmly maintain a combined maritime defense posture with a strong will to immediately repulse any kind of enemy provocations to protect the Republic of Korea". In April, South Korean media reported that Navy SEALs aboard the MI had trained with a local force to decapitate North Korea's Kim Jong Un regime.

From the South Korean side, the Sejong the Great Aegis destroyer will participate in the joint drill.

The U.S. and South Korean airforces will be also mobilized, including, among others, the land-based and long-range P-3C Orion Maritime patrol aircraft, the Lynx, Wildcat, UH-60, MH-60R and AH-64E helicopters, and the F-15k, FA-18, A-10 fighter jets.

As a rule, the US Navy does not comment on future operations, but the Reagan has been spotted in Korea's vicinity recently.

The nuclear-powered USS Michigan, a Ohio-class submarine, is expected to arrive in the South Korean port of Busan this weekend and is expected to take part in joint exercises with the USS Ronald Reagan and South Korean forces, Yonhap reported.

Additionally, the submarine is known to sometimes carry special forces.

At just over 170 meters long, it is one of the world's biggest submarines, capable of conducting underwater operations for more than three months.

It replaced another USA submarine, the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Tucson (SSN 770) that had stayed in Jinhae, a city in South Korea's southeastern region, on October 7-11.

The submarine was originally outfitted with Trident ballistic missiles, but now carries up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles-the equivalent of an entire surface battle group.
