Chota Udaipur: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had to face embarrassment after he mistakenly entered a ladies toilet at an event in Gujarat.

He led the Congress party's election campaign in 2014, the year which saw the party's worst ever performance in elections when they managed to win only 44 seats compared to 206 seats won previously in the 2009 general elections.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi addresses a public meeting during his road show at Karjan village in Vadodara on Tuesday.

The campaign is also meant to send a message to party workers that no one should ever think of bringing internal democracy in Congress, Bhasin said.

Rahul Gandhi will, in the upcoming days, take charge as the president of the Indian National Congress. "You have been asking this for so many years and it's now happening", Gandhi told the TV channel on the sidelines of the launch of former President Pranab Mukherjee's book.

Over the last few months, a chorus has been building for Rahul to take over as the Congress president. With Assembly elections round the corner, he is wooing voters in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. The Election Commission has set a December deadline for the Congress to conclude the exercise.

The Central Election Committee of the Congress Party has reviewed the preparations for the elections with the returning officer.

This was confirmed by his mother and the longest-serving president of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi.

Agarwal said that the all the leaders claimed that with Sonia Gandhi finding it hard to contribute enough time to the organisation, it was the right time to elevate Rahul Gandhi to the top post of Congress. "This is the right time to elevate Gandhi to the top post as it will give us strength to fight divisive forces in the country".
