Officer shot in New Orleans East, NOPD says

- A police officer in New Orleans was killed on Friday morning. It was then that a suspect opened fire, striking the slain officer several times. The officers returned fire and the suspect was also struck. Authorities say only one officer was injured and transported to UMC where he later died.

Meanwhile, the attacker apparently hid in a nearby apartment before he surrendered and was taken to the hospital.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the shooting occurred at about 12:14 a.m.

"Our officer has expired", said Superintendent Michael Harrison. "I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts".

New Orleans Police, Louisiana State Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had investigators at the scene.

According to Harrison, four patrolling officers saw suspicious activity and got out of their units.

Harrison said two officers might have fired on the gunman.

The police chief said grief counselors are on the scene.

The deceased officer's identity has not been released.

"Unfortunately, our worst nightmares have come to be", Landrieu said.
