An important implication of this definition is that mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.

Dr Ashley Weinberg, co-author of the report said: "Poorly designed jobs, work that is not well organised and challenging work environments can trigger or exacerbate mental health conditions".

Worryingly, more than a third of adults also said they didn't know where to go to get help for problems, leading Age UK to partner with NHS England to publish new guidance - 'Mental health in older people' - to help Global Positioning System tackle the problem.

And according to a separate study, employees feel clear communication that mental health issues are a valid reason for sick leave would make for a more inclusive workplace. It's also an opportunity for us to assess our own well being.

Older people also tend to find it more hard to talk about their mental health, as it was a more stigmatised topic when they were growing up, as depression and anxiety were often seen as a sign of weakness.

"Depression and anxiety affect almost eight million people over 55, but can often go unnoticed and untreated", commented Alistair Burns, national clinical director for Dementia, NHS England.

The report from Badenoch & Clark, part of the Adecco Group, surveyed 1,027 workers to find out what employers could do to create a more positive attitude towards mental health challenges in the workplace.

"Our report offers solutions to many of these problems". As a result, to date over 206,000 people in England have Mental Health First Aid skills.

Last week, in partnership with Business in the Community and others, we launched the Mental Health at Work Report which revealed that more than a million people who disclosed a mental health issue to their employer have faced negative consequences or even dismissal. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally more than 300 million people suffer from depression, while more than 260 million people live with anxiety disorder and most live with these two conditions.

"It is essential that we strive to give mental health the same parity of esteem that physical health problems have - in the NHS and throughout society - and in doing so reduce some of the unfortunate, and unwarranted, stigma that some patients face".

WHO commemorates World Mental Health on October 10 each year to raise awareness on mental health and mobilizing efforts to support better mental health.
