Retailers' seasonal hiring picture for the holidays is mixed.
Target is also looking to hire more than 100,000 workers and Macy's will hire around 80,000. Rather, the steady hiring is a sign of continued expansion by the retail giant.
There are several other major retailers adding jobs during the holiday season, including J C Penney Company Inc (NYSE:JCP), which will add an additional 40,000 workers, while Macy's Inc (NYSE:M) will expand its workforce by 80,000, below its 83,000 from a year ago.
Target Corp.: Target plans to hire approximately 100,000 store team members across the country - up from 70,000 previous year - and 4,500 at its distribution and fulfillment centers.
Amazon says it plans to hire 120,000 temporary employees to handle the coming crush of holiday orders, the same total as previous year.
But the e-commerce market is not in the same state as it was previous year.
Industry surveys predict that shoppers will spend more money this year than they did in 2016 on holiday shopping. The openings include positions at their fulfillment and sort centers as well as assisting in delivery services for Prime Now, Prime Pantry and AmazonFresh. The ec-ommerce behemoth has some 125,000 permanent, full-time employees at 75 fulfillment centers across the country.
Toys "R" Us Inc.: Toys "R" Us, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September, is hiring for part-time holiday positions at stores and distribution centers nationwide including more than 3,800 in New York City, 2,400 in Los Angeles, 1,100 in Chicago and 950 in Boston.
