Unilateralism does not work, unilateral sanctions lose popularity and unilaterally using force is very risky, Wang told a foreign ministers' meeting of the BRICS bloc that gathers Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump spoke about keeping pressure on North Korea using economic sanctions imposed through the United Nations, the White House said on Monday.

Trump said on Twitter in July that he and President Vladimir Putin have discussed the creation of a US-Russian cybersecurity unit, an idea that provoked howls of protest from Democrats and others deeply concerned over ongoing investigations into allegations of links between Russia, the Trump campaign, and a President who repeatedly said he wanted better relations with Moscow.

He also expressed his hope that the Russian initiative that involves sending a UN peacekeeping mission to Eastern Ukraine would ultimately help to resolve the crisis, adding that the relevant draft resolution had been already submitted to the UN Security Council.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a thinly veiled swipe at the United States, has warned that "military hysteria" over North Korea's nuclear weapons program could lead to "disaster".

"The mentally deranged behavior [sic] of the U.S. president openly expressing on the United Nations arena the unethical will to "totally destroy" a sovereign state, beyond the boundary of threats of regime change or overturn of social system, makes even those with normal thinking faculty think about discretion and composure", Kim said.

"Any unilateral sanctions imposed aside from the sanctions approved by the UN Security Council are illegitimate and undermine the collective nature of the global efforts", Lavrov said.

"The Sept. 19 statement, through its political dialogue, holds milestone significance in resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula", Lu said.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has on numerous occasions criticized the deal, calling it a mistake.
