Rescuers have fanned out to reach stunned victims after Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, knocking out electricity to the entire island and triggering landslides and floods. Check out these incredible images of the storm and its aftermath.
Forecasters said Maria will move "well east" of the southeastern coast of the US over the next few days.
Hurricane Maria has caused widespread devastation the island of Puerto Rico after making landfall in the US territory just weeks after Hurricane Irma skirted the coast, causing service disruptions for shippers throughout the Caribbean.
What else should I know about the hurricane? One other person, who did not want to be identified, said Hurricane Maria, which tore into the island as a Category 5 storm on Monday night, has left behind not only destroyed houses, broken bridges, uprooted trees, torn roofs, but also broken lives.
In an interview today on ABS News in Antigua, Prime Minister Skerrit said it was a miracle that the death toll was not in the hundreds. "I saw nearly complete devastation", Skerrit said, recounting his impressions after making several flights over the territory.
Meanwhile, the US Coast Guard, US Navy and the Royal Navy are searching for a boat that went missing off Puerto Rico during the hurricane, with two adults and two children aboard. It was even stronger than Irma when it hit the Florida Keys earlier this month.
A curfew was imposed across the island after 155mph winds ripped off roofs and brought down balconies and power lines, plunging the entire United States territory of 3.5 million people into darkness. Barges were also destroyed in the storm, residents said, causing concern not only for Saint Croix, but for nearby Saint Thomas and Saint John, which had been receiving aid from the larger of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
