"What's foremost in my mind and many others, is trying to figure out the best way to help", Jennifer said.

Lopez was named co-chair of a NY state initiative to assist Puerto Rico, which will include public donation centers and government monitoring for potential abuses in aid solicitation.

The state effort includes a relief fund coordinated with the Partnership for New York City, a business group, to solicit donations greater than $10,000 from businesses.

The governor traveled to Puerto Rico on Friday with Representative Nydia Velazquez, a Democrat born in Yabucoa, in the southeastern part of the island, on a plane donated by JetBlue. The supplies will be collected and managed at the Javits Center in New York City by the New York National Guard.

Cuomo also made a reference to Republican President Donald Trump's comments criticizing athletes who protest during the national anthem, saying "instead of arguing with football players. And those are the people in Puerto Rico".

She has always been proud of her Puerto Rican heritage.

Jennifer took a break from her Las Vegas residency to make the announcement in The Big Apple.

Aside from her own hefty donation, Lopez said that those who have already pledged to help in a major way are the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball. "Anybody we've called is right there asking what they can do".

A delegation of US elected officials is headed to Washington D.C.to urge the federal government to give Puerto Rico the same level of assistance and urgency that it gave to help Texas and Florida in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Representative Velazquez reiterated her plans to request federal waivers that would allow aid to flow more quickly to the island. There will also be separate collections for school and medical supplies.
