Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev reacted strongly to the bill's signing, saying it showed a "fully-fledged trade war (has been) declared against Russia" and that "the Trump administration demonstrated complete impotence, in the most humiliating manner, transferring executive powers to Congress". He was deputy assistant attorney general under President George W. Bush. Thanks for having me, Ari. Grand juries do have subpoena power for witnesses and records before they have chosen whether to indict the involved party. Is it enough to seek an indictment? It is just a prosecutor, a grand jury, and a judge and a witness. They cannot decline to testify. So it really just gives a lot more investigatory tools, robust investigatory tools, to move the investigation forward.
SHAPIRO: Do you know anything about what this grand jury will be tasked with?
"Our relationship with Russia is at an all-time & very dangerous low". If you lie to a grand jury you get charged with perjury. He is the White House counsel for the president - special counsel for the president.
DUPREE JR: Well, it was the case that is well-known. You don't leave your private sector job in the legal community where you're making a lot of money to join, like, kind of an effort in a government that's going to last a couple of months or that's not going to go anywhere.
SHAPIRO: Put this into context for us. Welcome to the program. And they say, hey, this is the information we got. Mueller has impaneled a grand jury here in Washington. Sources described an investigation that has widened to focus on possible financial crimes, some unconnected to the 2016 elections, alongside the ongoing scrutiny of possible illegal coordination with Russian spy agencies and alleged attempts by President Donald Trump and others to obstruct the FBI investigation. That is very important because the person is under oath.
The legislation also imposes sanctions on Iran and North Korea.
The dollar earlier rose the most in six weeks against the pound, which also dropped to its lowest since November against the euro, after the Bank of England voted 6-2 to keep policy on hold and trimmed its growth forecasts.
MARTIN: What do you make of the president's public comments about the investigation? Ty Cobb - I interviewed him.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated. Is he helping himself, or is he hurting himself? Greg Andres is a really smart cop, private attorney for a firm in New York, and he had been a longtime Justice Department guy before that. We've seen them attack the very basis for probing the Russian deal in the first place - or the Russian connections in the first place. Why reinvent the wheel, so to speak? They're clearly trying to lay the groundwork for discrediting the investigation in the public eye as nothing more than a Democrat-inspired partisan witch hunt. The CNN report isn't the first to claim that Mueller was examining Trump team business dealings, but coming on the heels of the Wall Street Journal report, it's almost certain to increase presidential fury. Thanks so much for your time this morning, Mr. Dupree.
