Lukaku inspires United thumping, Spurs win

Which Manchester United players stood out against West Ham United?

The opening weekend of the Premier League season ended with an emphatic win as Manchester United beat West Ham United 4-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday but manager Jose Mourinho was wary of fuelling talk of his team as title contenders.

The east London club's next clash is an away fixture at Southampton, who began the season with a goalless draw at home to Swansea, on Saturday before a trip to Newcastle and, following the global break, a home showdown with Huddersfield.

Have you read Trendiee Today? The difference between Lukaku and Matic is exactly that, they have years and years of the Premier League.

Once sold by Mourinho when the pair were at Chelsea together, Lukaku could be the catalyst for a first serious title challenge from United since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

The Hammers were completely outplayed and could easily have trailed by more goals before substitute Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba finally put a more realistic slant on the scoreline in the closing minutes.

Manchester United won their opening league game of last season, too, a 3-1 victory at Bournemouth.

Another new signing, Nemanja Matic, played a key role in the first goal after he intercepted a West Ham pass and set Marcus Rashford off on the breakaway. He got one against Real Madrid in the Super Cup on Tuesday but he has been bought to do it in the Premier League. "I think Victor is a little bit of that and he's going to have that time".

The former Chelsea forward struck again in the 53rd minute with a powerful header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free-kick.

Defender Pablo Zabaleta has been recruited on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City at the end of last season.

And with just seven minutes on the clock, giving an indication of things to come, the Belgian bulldozer burst down the left before forcing the first corner of the game and then Lukaku nodded down on to the penalty-spot but no home shirts were in the vicinity to convert.

Juan Mata and Rashford did well in the wide roles - Rashford especially, who hit the post in the second half - but there is still room for an out-and-out winger.

"To play in front of such a crowd is a dream come true but most importantly is the three points", he said. But he will be mindful of what happened last season. "They have done a great job - and on time".

But which players particularly impressed?

There is no reason why he shouldn't recreate the form that made him a favourite at Old Trafford, but he didn't get much change out of Bailly and Jones.
