Himachal Pradesh: Six dead and several injured in landslides


At least six persons were killed and many are feared trapped in a massive landslide in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday morning, an official said.

The incident happened near Mandi-Pathankot highway on Saturday night. Indian Army personnel and members of the NDRF have been called for fast execution of the rescue operations. Six passengers have survived, whereas 2 bodies have been recovered from the debris.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated: "Pained by the loss of lives due to landslide related accidents in HP's Mandi district".

While one bus was on its way to Chamba district from the resort town of Manali, another was on its way to Katra in the neighboring state of Jammu and Kashmir from Manali. Two buses, one auto and a bike were damaged in the landslide.

At least 44 passengers died after a bus carrying them turned turtle and fell into River Tons in Himachal Pradesh's Gumma on Wednesday.

Mandi deputy commissioner, along with officials from administration and police is also camping at the spot. Himachal Pradesh Transport Minister GS Bali the number of those feared dead could be as high as 50.

Chief minister Virbhadra Singh will reportedly visit the site of the accident to take stock of the situation.
