During the friendly competition, a D.C. -area hospital released the following statement about the condition of Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot Wednesday while practicing for the game with his colleagues.

The hospital said he would require additional operations and said he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.

"I served with many of these congressmen, they're my friends, including Rep. Steve Scalise, who is seriously wounded - but I can say with confidence that he continues to receive the best possible medical care".

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

Doctors said the bullet traveled across his pelvis fracturing bones and injured internal organs, causing the loss of a lot of blood.

Top US Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise continued to show improvement as he recovers from being shot by a gunman angry about President Donald Trump, the hospital treating him said Saturday.

More on this as it develops. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

Mika, a MI native, was one of five people shot when a gunman opened fire Wednesday as the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia. He has undergone several surgeries and has more ahead.

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

Trump spoke during a White House event devoted to what aides called "Apprenticeship and Workforce of Tomorrow initiatives". And the president briefly beamed in on a jumbotron, thanking the lawmakers, their staffs, "and baseball fans across the country" for their support.

Kerry knows of what he speaks: "Former Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that the Iran nuclear deal could hold even if President Donald Trump pulls out but he warned that imposing new economic sanctions against Tehran could be risky".

Congressman Scalise was among five people wounded in the attack. He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.

Fox News reported that it had confirmed the existence of a list found in Hodgkinson's possession, containing names of Republicans. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

"He was as critical as can be when he came in", Sava said, adding that Scalise was at "imminent risk of death". Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.
