As for Scalise, he's still in critical condition, but he's improving.

Scalise was among those shot last Wednesday by John Hodgkinson, who opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers who were wrapping up an early morning baseball practice at a field in Arlington, Va. Hodgkinson, who died from injuries sustained as he exchanged gunfire with authorities, had a list of lawmakers' names on his person.

Scalise underwent his third surgery Thursday, which was anticipated when he first came into the hospital. He was shot in the hip but the bullet tore through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday.

"By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said. The President also credited Scalise for bringing unity to the country.

Trump's comments came at the beginning of his speech in Miami Friday announcing a partial rollback of ties to Cuba - reversing changes made by President Barack Obama's administration. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.

During the baseball practice on Wednesday, a gunman opened fire, injuring Scalise, congressional staffer Zach Barth, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika and two members of the Capitol Police force, Crystal Griner and David Bailey. He remains in critical condition.

Lawmakers went ahead with the charity baseball game on Thursday to honor Scalise. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.
