Reports state that the unfortunate incident had occurred when a crowd had assembled on the bridge in an attempt to dissuade a person who was seemingly trying to commit suicide on Thursday.

"Around 30-35 were rescued according to Fire department officials".

This article will be updated as we get more details.

There were over 50 people on the bridge on the Sanvordem river, a tributary of the Zuari, near Curchorem village when the structure gave way around 7.30pm. But these are unconfirmed sources. "The body is that of the man, who had committed suicide before the bridge collapse", a senior police official told PTI.

The bridge, dating back to the Portuguese era, has been closed to traffic since the last 4 years.

Fire and emergency services personnel were busy rescuing the suicidal woman, but some 50 people were watching their efforts from the bridge when it could not take their weight and collapsed.

Some who fell had managed to swim to safety but Pednekar said he was unable to confirm local media reports that up to 30 people were still missing, adding that "search operations are ongoing".

Parrikar told reporters that all agencies concerned had been pressed into action.

"A massive search and rescue operation is being carried out".

A few others are still said to be missing. Nine divers had been rushed to Curchorem, a navy spokesperson said.

The rescue operation was going on until late night. Parsekar was crossing the new bridge on his motorcycle when another passerby stopped him to inform that somebody had just jumped into the river from the footbridge.
