Kim Si-woo becomes youngest victor of The Players Championship

World No. 1-ranked Dustin Johnson matched his best Players score with a 68 and posted his best 72-hole position with a tie for 12th at 2-under.

SERGIO GARCIA is not only a victor in golf but also in love.

World No.3 Jason Day had a Sunday afternoon to forget. Despite winning golf's "fifth major", Kim still plans to sign up to the army. Not exactly terrific news if you're a 21-year-old, although it's clear that Kim has the talent to be great if he can keep himself healthy. "I'm looking forward to working hard from now on".

However, after fellow pro Brian Gay discovered a discrepancy in the points allocation for players coming back off medical exemptions, the Tour recalculated his points tally and Poulter was handed a lifeline until the end of the season.

Kim fired a bogey-free final round of three-under 69 to snatch the title at 10-under 278 at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Sunday (local time). If you can do that around this golf course, you can outscore everyone.

Poulter, 20 years older than Kim, knew the goods when he saw the leaderboards.

"I'm very excited to play at the Presidents Cup", the South Korean said.

He also managed to take all the drama out of the final round, rare for this tournament and this golf course. The first was K.J. Choi, who has become a mentor to the youngster.

"Thanks for the invite and help, European Tour", said the Englishman. He came to the perilous par-3 17th with a two-shot lead, calmly found the middle of the green and two-putted and then he played a solid drive down the centre of the 18th fairway.

For runner-up Poulter it was also a bounce back of sorts.

"I really wish we could have that benefit".

"From that moment, I was dreaming that I really want to be in this tournament", Kim said through a translator. I think I've still got some work to do. "But it was tough to get it close on those closing holes".

Kim, who doesn't celebrate his 22nd birthday until June 28, said: "I didn't expect that I could be the champion of this tournament at this young age".

"I know he hit a couple of fantastic shots yesterday to get himself out of trouble, driver off the deck on 14 was a pretty impressive shot". "He's gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure".

He made an immediate impact upon his return to the Tour previous year, however, winning his maiden PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship. At 21, he was the season's youngest victor.

It offers exemptions to athletes who win a medal of any colour at the Olympics or gold at the Asian Games but unfortunately for Kim, winning the PGA Tour's flagship event does not bring an exemption.
