Hartless was later found dead inside the nursing home where Medrano worked.
Forty-three-year-old gunman Thomas Hartless killed himself after the slayings Friday at a nursing home in Kirkersville, about 25 miles (39 kilometers) east of Columbus. Hartless' former girlfriend, nurse Marlina Medrano, who had filed for protection orders against Hartless for domestic violence, was shot several times with a handgun and shotgun. He was also previously served in jail after an abduction case reported against him with another woman in the year 2009, which was solved after some period.
A search warrant was executed at his home on Oakland Avenue in Utica.
Hartless then took his own life. Hartless was later found dead inside the nursing home where Medrano worked.
In this May 13, 2017 photo, Amanda Patterson, left, of Pataskala, Ohio, says a prayer with her sons, Connor, 4, foreground, and Samuel, 2, at a makeshift memorial outside the Kirkersville Police Department in Kirkersville, Ohio. Higgins says apparently "mistakes were made" and that understanding what happened is important. Medrano had written the court back in March before a judge issued the sentence: "I am not trying to validate why he acted the way he did. I simply want it to be known that there are more variables involved in the equation".
