With many Scots - 62 per cent of whom voted to remain in the European Union - leery of being dragged into a hard Brexit by a Conservative UK government in thrall to English nationalism, the case for Scottish independence could be compelling.

"If they truly trusted the British people - and wanted to give them a real say over the future direction of this country - then they would have committed to a democratic vote on any final deal", she said.

Jeremy Corbyn has promised to put wealth "in the hands of the people of Britain" as he turned his fire on big business and the rich in his first major speech of the general election campaign.

Mr Farron was speaking as he visited the Manchester seats of Gorton and Withington, two of a string of Remain-voting Labour strongholds in the North West of England which the Lib Dems hope to snatch from Mr Corbyn's party.

Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May unexpectedly called the general election three years ahead of schedule in a bid to capitalise on Labour's internal divisions and dwindling support.

"I don't play by their rules, and if a Labour government is elected on the 8th of June we won't play by their rules either", he said.

On Tuesday Prime Minister Theresa May had called for a snap General Election on 8 June, which was approved by MPs on Wednesday.

Asked where the reciprocity lay in trying to charge a massive "exit fee", put at around £50bn, for leaving the EU, Mr Tajani said: "No we have to be clear on this, the United Kingdom will pay only the money, nothing more nothing less. And Labour in this election will be part of a movement of the British people to make that change". A number of Labour MPs have announced plans to step down, including Alan Johnson, a former Home Secretary, and Tom Blenkinsop, the MP for the northeast constituency of Middlesborough South, who cited "significant and irreconcilable differences with the Labour leadership".

"Our position hasn't changed and we have laid out our six tests for any Brexit deal", she said.

An increase in the Conservative Party's working majority in the House of Commons (currently 17 MPs) would give Mrs. The European Parliament will have to approve any deal agreed between Britain and the 27-member EU.

Corbyn said his party was not intimidated by the groups that were hoarding the UK's money and insisted he would make sure everyone paid their taxes, Efe news reported.

Mr Farron said the Tories were assuming a "coronation" for Mrs May, despite an approach to Brexit which has "made Nigel Farage look like a moderate".
