Volvo announces plans to export China-made electric car


Separately, Volvo r&d boss Henrik Green confirmed in Shanghai that Volvo is simultaneously developing full-electric cars that will be underpinned by its larger scalable product architecture, which is now used by the automaker's 90-series models such as it XC90 large SUV and the second-generation XC60 midsize SUV that debuted at the Geneva auto show last month.

Sales of electric and gasoline-electric hybrids fell 4.4 percent from a year earlier to 55,929 vehicles while sales of SUVs rose 21 percent to 2.4 million.

"It's hard for someone with an EV to come and take away market share from SUVs", stated Ben Cavender of China Market Research Group.

Changing consumer tastes and Government incentives are shaping the market, with manufacturers increasingly focused on ensuring a presence in the SUV and electric categories - something expected to be evident in the Shanghai Motor Show, which opens today.

China is the world's largest sales market for electrified cars and has ambitious targets to expand sales of fully electric and hybrid cars in order to address congestion and air quality issues in its cities.

Global automakers unveiled new SUVs, electric vehicles, and futuristic concept cars at the Shanghai Auto Show on Wednesday, racing for an edge in the world's biggest auto market as growth slows after years of frenzied sales.

The company also offers an extensive range of highly engineered Long thermal-management products for electric and hybrid vehicles, including aluminum integrated cooling plates that ensure the performance and reliability of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches.

Unable to afford a auto, Shanghai university student Long Yi endured an expensive taxi commute across his vast city until he started using one of the car-sharing schemes quickly gaining momentum in China.

"Sustainability is one of the mega trends worldwide, and China is a leading market in electric mobility", said Audi's Dietmar Voggenreiter.

Some 832,300 sport utility vehicles were sold in China in March, with domestic makers having nine of the top 10 best-sellers, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Volvo has two factories in China and in 2015 became the first automaker to export Chinese-made cars to the United States.

For Korean SUV producer SsangYong, a Korean unit of Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra, the Shanghai Motor Show may be a gateway into China as it hopes to make up for the fall in overseas sales from Russian Federation.

"With three plants - and the designation of one auto line for each plant - Volvo creates an efficient production structure ensuring future capacity for growth", Samuelsson said at an event in Shanghai last November. News reports say regulators might have agreed to lower or delay them in an updated plan due out this year, but there has been no official confirmation.

Expect lots of crossovers to make their debuts at Auto China this year, including the Mini John Cooper Works Countryman SE Cooper All4, the high-performance version of the popular crossover from the German-owned British brand.

The government also is spending heavily to increase the appeal of electrics by expanding China's network of charging stations to reduce "range anxiety", or buyers' fear of running out of power. The brand's pioneer electric vehicle will go on sale after a decade of the takeoff of their plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of the Superb hatchback. Koenigsegg joins forces for their Super EV concept; a 310-mile-range, four-door, four-seat supercar.
