JOHN YANG: Last week, the president signed a pair of executive orders aimed at combating foreign trade abuses, but he has yet to carry out his campaign promise to formally label China a currency manipulator. It's a two-way street, with Alaska's imports from China only lagging behind trade with neighboring Canada.

China is ready to enhance law-enforcement cooperation with the USA side, said Xi, calling on the two sides to jointly combat transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, child trafficking, money laundering, cyber crime and organized crime.

The summit was expected to shed light on the policies of both leaders toward various smoldering issues: North Korea, Taiwan, territorial disputes in the South China Sea and Sino-American trade relations.

The missile strike on Syria overshadowed meetings that United States and Chinese officials described as big-picture conversations on trade as well as North Korea, which stopped short of producing specific agreements.

Pyongyang has repeatedly warned that it aims to test an intercontinental ballistic missile or conduct another underground nuclear test. Analysts say one could come as soon as April 15, the 105th birthday of North Korea's founding president and celebrated annually as the Day of the Sun.

Regarding the biggest pending issue between them, North Korea, Trump and Xi managed only a pledge to strengthen cooperation toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The results of Xi and Trump's meetings on Thursday and Friday show a stark change in attitude between the two countries, especially from the American leader.

Trump's barnstorming presidential campaign past year appeared to set him on course for conflict with China, which he accused of rigging forex markets and cheating at trade to steal American jobs.

During a campaign rally a year ago, Mr Trump referred to a string of his golf clubs when claiming: "You know what - and I love golf - but if I were in the White House, I don't think I'd ever see Turnberry again, I don't think I'd ever see Doral again, I own Doral in Miami, I don't think I'd ever see numerous places that I have".

"President Xi clearly understands", Tillerson clarified, "and I think agrees, that the situation has intensified and has reached a certain level of threat that action has to be taken", according to The Guardian.

Xi made the two-day trip to the southeastern US coastal town of Palm Beach for the first meeting with Trump, in a bid to chart the course of bilateral ties in a new era.

Mnuchin said the discussions focused on creating a "more balanced economic relationship, specifically on trade". Although the Trump-Xi summit did not achieve a milestone, they have expressed the desire to continue and the relationship.

Trump accepted Xi's invitation to visit China this year, and Washington will coordinate with Beijing about the timing of the visit, according to Tillerson.

The talks were overshadowed by Trump's decision to launch USA missile strikes on a Syrian air base in retaliation for President Bashar al-Assad's deadly chemical weapons attack on civilians.

The North Korean missile crisis was the other issue that drew the attention of the two leaders at the summit meeting.

Trump reportedly informed Xi about the attack after a dinner on Thursday.
