Marine Le Pen denies France's role in rounding up Jews during WWII

The Vel' d'Hiv Roundup was a Nazi directed raid and mass arrest of Jews in Paris by the French police on 16 and 17 July 1942.

Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem says 1,000 Jews were deported to the Auschwitz death camp every two or three days in the two months following the stadium arrests.

"So, I want them to be proud of being French again", she said.

Socialist candidate Benoit Hamon said there was no longer any doubt that Le Pen was from the extreme right.

Small independent presidential candidate Jean Lassalle, a lawmaker with centrist views, denounced Le Pen's "disgraceful" remarks. "This violence only sustains violence, with the people below being hit in the face with bombs", Alexis Corbiere said on Radio Classique.

Israel issued a statement condemning Le Pen's freaky message, which "contradicts the historical truth as expressed in statements by French presidents who recognized the country's responsibility for the fate of the French Jews who perished in the Holocaust".

Around 50 Corsica nationalists demonstrated in front of the venue in Ajaccio, where Le Pen was holding her rally.

De Gaulle, then the leader of the Free French forces, lived in London during World War II while the Vichy regime collaborated with Nazi Germany.

In a statement issued by the far-right presidential candidate on Sunday, she specifies that although there were French collaborationists who supported the Vichy regime and participated in the "vile roundup {of Jews} of the Vel d' Hiv", France as such does not have responsibility for the Holocaust.

"Some had forgotten that Marine Le Pen is the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen", Mr Macron, the front-runner in the April 23-May 7 two-round election, told BFM TV. Polls suggest Marine Le Pen will advance to the second round of the election.

THE French presidential campaign is in full swing, with the first round scheduled for April 23rd and a likely run-off between the top two finishers on May 7th.

Le Pen's remarks came just ahead of the Jewish festival of Passover and amid a tide of nationalism and populism sweeping French and European politics.
