Harry Kane looks on as England prepare for Lithuania clash

England reach the halfway point of their World Cup qualifying campaign with Sunday's home qualifier against Lithuania.

Germany and England, having been closely matched in a friendly on Wednesday night, go to the other end of the global scale on Monday morning (Hong Kong time) in their World Cup qualifiers when they face Azerbaijan and Lithuania respectively.

Thus, they could not play the game they wanted against Joachim Löw's Germany, and I suggest that England transform themselves into a direct counter-pressing team.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper is now on loan at Torino after losing his place at Manchester City when Pep Guardiola arrived at the Etihad and has played 28 times for the Italian club this season.

In light of Cahill's absence, alongside those of Wayne Rooney and Jordan Henderson, Hart will captain his country. "I only heard about it afterwards, I didn't hear anything whilst I was playing", he said.

Members of the England Supporters Travel Club who took part will be banned from the group and potentially handed a Football Banning Order, preventing them from attending future matches.

Ben Gibson fits Southgate's template of leaders who can fit into the group after the uncapped Middlesbrough defender was called up to replace Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling, who suffered a knock against Germany on Wednesday.

Podolski made the comments after scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 German win over England at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday, capping the 31-year-old's final global appearance in style. "It just means I'll have to put a few more miles on the clock going round and seeing them".

"I don't think [having a set captain] has been an FA guideline, ever".

"I don't think he's eager to make anything completely different and change everything for us here and there".

He added: "We know how important the national football team is for the feeling of the nation".

"Whenever you're in an England squad you'll probably think about it". We have some great strengths and if we couple those with some other traits we could be more powerful than anybody, but we have a lot of work to get to that point.

The big teams are similarly short odds, with Germany away to the nation lying 89th in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings and England hosting the 107th-ranked country. We want competition for places, we have got competition for places in every area of the field.

Football is generally a free-flowing game, one which is less reliant on structure and forward planning in comparison to rugby.
